I was shocked to learn that your company conducts cruel animal experiments for the batch testing of your products BOTOX®, BOTOX Cosmetics® and VISTABEL®.

Groups of mice are injected with different doses of the substance in the abdomen. The mice are subjected to terrible pain. They suffer from paralysis, impaired vision and respiratory distress. After three or four days of suffering they finally die of suffocation.

Although the European Pharmacopoeia requires this test for every batch of botulinum toxin, three alternative assays are allowed, if these yield the same results as the LD50 test. This means it is in your hands to validate and use these alternatives methods.

I know that your company is working on alternative methods. I urge you to use these and to stop all animal experiments for the batch testing of your botulinum toxin products, regardless if these are used for medical or cosmetic purposes.

In addition I urge you to cooperate with the other manufacturers of botulinum toxin products with the aim to achieve a deletion of the mouse LD50 test in the European Pharmacopoeia.

As long as you are conducting these animal experiments I will boycott your products.
