Fur Farm Free Finland 2025

On February 1, 2010 Animalia - A Federation for the Protection of Animals - launched a campaign Fur Farm Free Finland 2025 with the aim of banning fur farming nationwide by 2025. In the core of the campaign is to urge Finland to decide upon a schedule for the abolishment of the disputed livelihood. With the campaign Animalia appeals to the politicians and political parties in order to bring the issue of fur farming forward and around.

Appeal to the Finnish MPs to ban fur farming!

Finland lags behind development

Over the recent years the trend in Europe has been extremely promising. Countries in Western Europe are one by one abolishing fur farming and/or heavily restricting it. For instance Denmark –one of the leading fur farming countries– banned fox farming last year. Similarly to that, Dutch Parliament prohibited mink farming. In fact, The Netherlands is heading towards a total ban on fur farming after the ratification of the decision since fox and chinchilla farming have already been prohibited in Holland. Added to that, Ireland decided on a total ban at the end of last year.

Other European countries having applied restrictions on fur farming are Sweden, Germany, Austria, Croatia, Bulgaria, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Switzerland along with Great Britain.

In spite of the encouraging development in Europe Finland is lagging badly behind due to the lack of political discussion regarding the industry’s future. Poland has adopted a similar policy of silence in regard to fur farming whereas in the rest of the Europe the debate on fur farming and its acceptability is out and loud.

Breaking the silence

The time for the discussion of the future of fur farming is NOW, states Animalia. A plan and a schedule for the total ban on fur farming in Finland is vital. Therefore the political silence surrounding the issue has to end, Animalia demands.

Animalia’s agenda and the Fur Farm Free Finland 2025 campaign thereof is also supported by a wide variety of Finnish celebrities, such as authors Leena Krohn and Risto Isomäki, an artist Jani Leinonen, an actress Pamela Tola and a film director Aki Kaurismäki who describes fur farming as “the last nail in the coffin of the humanity”.

Appeal to the Finnish MPs!

The Parliament Members are in a key position when it comes to banning fur farming in Finland. Contact the MPs, ask for their opinion regarding fur farming and demand them to take action in ending it!

You can send a message through our website or email the MPs yourself (the names and contacts of the Finnish MPs can be found here and their positions regarding fur farming here: Red represents MPs pro fur farming, green against, blacks are uncertain and yellows' positions are unknown.)

The arctic fox doesn’t belong in a cage

Finland is one of the leading farmers of arctic foxes (or blue foxes as the farmers call them) in the world with the total of nearly million foxes per year. The dismal destiny of the Finnish arctic fox is to live six months whilst locked in a cage. This canine populating the barren plateau in Lapland and fairly active in character suffers the torturous cramped living conditions in the wired cages. Yet even according to the upcoming improved animal protection requirements there’s less than one square metre of room for a full-grown fox.

Finland farms altogether about four million fur animals per year. In addition to the arctic/blue fox, other significant species for fur farming include the silver fox, mink and the raccoon dog. Additionally the polecat, sable, nutria and chinchilla are counted as fur animals in Finland.

Serious problems have been discovered in the well-being of all of these species as a result of the cruel living conditions on Finnish fur farms.
